CATCH, PHOTOGRAPH AND RELEASE

Catch, Photograph and Release (CPR) is an important part of recreational fishing. Trout are stocked in Lake Isabella on a regular basis from late fall thru early spring (depending on water temperatures). Black Bass (LARGEMOUTH BASS and SMALL MOUTH BASS), CRAPPIE, CHANNEL CATFISH and WHITE CATFISH are not stocked and are self- sustaining. These fish populations are self-sustaining so it is important to release some of the larger breeding fish. In some cases, it takes many years for the fish to reach breeding maturity. It is ok to take some fish for the dinner table, but voluntary catch and release is a great way to protect Lake Isabella’s outstanding fishing opportunities.

HOW TO RELEASE FISH

1. Land your fish as carefully and quickly as possible. 2. Try to avoid removing the fish from the water. Underwater unhooking and release is preferred. 3. Do not squeeze the fish, or touch its eyes or gills. 4. Remove only those hooks that you can see and remove easily. Otherwise, clip the line near the mouth on deep hooked fish. 5. Use artificial lures (no bait) to minimize deep hooking. Barbless hooks or hooks with flattened barbs make unhooking easier and less stressful on the fish.
